Make Heroine ga Oosugiru!

Despite not understanding much about fleeting teen romance, first-year high school student Kazuhiko Nukumizu still wonders how he would react if his life were to be turned into a love story. Regardless, as a self-proclaimed "background character," Nukumizu is satisfied continuing his life as an introvert with a negligible social life. However, he suddenly finds himself too close to the spotlight when he witnesses his popular classmate Anna Yanami be rejected by her childhood friend in the middle of a family restaurant.

While Nukumizu wishes he could just forget what he saw and move on, Anna ends up forcefully confiding herself in Nukumizu, lamenting her status as a childhood friend fated to have her beloved stolen. As he becomes dragged into Anna's situation, Nukumizu soon gets caught up in the relationship drama of two more girls: Lemon Yakishio, an outgoing member of the track and field club; and Chika Komari, a shy member of the literature club. Now thrust out of his comfort zone, Nukumizu finds himself a major character in the lives of too many losing heroines.

Been a while since I've been into anime. This show was on my list when it came out since the premise seemed interesting but I only got around to it now since I've decided "let's watch some anime, it's been a while" so I wanted to get this one out of the way. I have no clue why I'm making a review I just suddenly thought so while finishing the show because I had a lot to say I don't know if I'll do this again I'm not that active on MAL as I was when I was younger. This also just general thoughts anyways ... up to you on what you get from this.

The initially hook for me was, again, the premise. The premise focusing on the "the losing heroine" trope as the show puts it sounds like it could make for an interesting play on the trope, and has a lot of potential to be interesting. And I would say the show executed it well. It mainly focuses on the childhood friend trope and how they're commonly the heroine who "loses" the romance and it does a good job of exploring the many aspects that would come with the trope; the complicated romantic feelings of a long time friend, how this would affect the heroine who "won" and it really makes use of the premise by having two heroines in the situation as well as having another main character that explore the pov of the non-childhood friend character of the love-triangle, or as the show puts it the "homewrecker" so it really is able to explore that trope well. My main issue though, and it's less of a problem with the show and more of a curiosity moving forward since I'm not invested enough to read the source material, is if the show will continue the premise or just become another slice-of-life romance story or if it will add in other heroines archetypes to keep the premise since at a certain point of the show the romance aspect is sidelined for a more character focused story and that's not a bad thing, I think it's a good storyline, but it kinda makes the premise obsolete and just a nice hook. I'm still debating whether to watch the next season or not.

Moving on to other aspects of the show, the characters are done well. The show mainly focuses on the main guy and the three heroines I mentioned earlier and the show had dedicated arcs so each girl gets to have their own focus which I think is good and something I like as well is during all of the storylines with the heroines, the main guy subtly gets developed along side them as he gets out of his shell more, it's nice. The characters are fun to watch, and the way many of them act and communicate with each other feels very believable out of highschoolers and it's nice to watch. The main two leads are fun since the show tries to make them as platonic as possible but there's enough about them where they relationship can reach romantic and I think both scenarios can work well; either having them be platonic showing the importance of male-female platonic friendships, which is something I'm a big fan of, or having them start out as simply friends but as time goes by they eventually become something more, which is something I also like, so both work. Generally the cast is good, I mainly like the doctor character and the weird student council girl; I've gone this far not mentioning names I'm not starting now. They both have some funny moments and are fun to watch, though the doctor character is kinda weird and I don't really get her thing but she's fun and kinda bad so it's fine. I'm not a fan of the child teachers, I don't know why she looks like that; and I'm also not a fan of the main guys little sister. Whenever they interact if feels weirdly intimate, like how many anime have brothers and sisters interact, like they never had a sister; and her very obsessive relationship with him is weird but she does ok to show the main guys loneliness problem.

Those are the main things I wanted to say about the show, but for some other details; the humors ok. When it's making it's own jokes about the premise and the cast it hits, but when it uses the humor of usual romance comedies, it doesn't hit. It's especially is so if they point out the joke being from other comedies yet they do it anyways. It feels pointless; pointing something out yet not doing anything about it. The artstyle's nice; it's no too overly bright, which is an issue I have with most modern anime, the characters expressions are fun. The animation was a bit rough early on but as it went on it got much better, and I really like when at some points the show gets really animated, it's fun. The opening is fun and fits the show, but is not really something I would listen on my own, and of the the three endings the show has I prefer the first since it looks cool and song is semi-interesting.

That's all I wanted to say. Overall, the show's solid, decently well-written and good use of it's premise. I still have no clue why chose to write this but I did. Anyways, last thing I want to say is: Why do the girls have so many bows on their uniform is there school's in Japan where that's normal? That's all.

Mixed Feelings

Make Heroine ga Oosugiru! Review

Wey my old review got deleted by admint... Fine. We go again.

Make Heroine ga Oosugiru!, 2024 anime that I finally finished now. I remember that season clearly. Alya was airing too. Back then I even said that season felt like the rebirth of romcom. And honestly… yeah, it kinda was.

At first I gave this anime a straight 10.

After finishing it properly? Okay, calm down. It drops to 9.

First of all, the visuals are insane. Like actually insane. It looks like a movie. I’m serious. The lighting, the color work, the framing. It doesn’t look like your average seasonal romcom. And thankfully ... this anime doesn’t just gather a bunch of bland characters into one bland circle. The cast is interesting. The premise is strong. The delivery is clean. The dialogue is smart. The pacing control? You can tell the creator knows exactly what they’re doing.

But then… what’s missing?

Ah yes.

The DOKI DOKI.

And to be specific, the tension I mean is for the MC.

Nukumizu feels like a freaking side character in his own anime. I get it, that’s part of the premise. He’s supposed to be the observer, the background guy, the one helping the “losing heroines.” I understand the concept.

But bro.

This is too much.

He barely feels like he’s emotionally pushed. The girls are developing. The atmosphere is developing. The story is developing. But the MC? Sometimes it feels like he’s just… there. Watching. Reacting. Supporting. Existing.

Where is his internal conflict. Where is the emotional cornering. Where is the moment where he actually feels shaken.

For a story balancing three heroines, the emotional battlefield should be intense. Instead, it’s calm. Too calm. It feels safe. Polite. Carefully controlled.

Season 1 is clearly heavy on building. And I respect that. But building three heroines at once while keeping the MC almost passive makes the pace feel slower than it should. If you like faster romantic progression, this might feel heavy.

And yet…

I’m curious.

That’s the dangerous part. The writing is smart. The setup is strong. If Season 2 gives Nukumizu real emotional pressure, real stakes, real heart-racing moments, this could easily go back to a 10.

Overall: 9/10
No lies, this anime is genuinely good. My review is just pure frustration because I wanted more fire.

This show was advertised as a romance anime "without the drama", but after the first few episodes, you realize that there's nothing BUT drama! The high rating here (around 8 at the time of writing) is definitely not deserved. The animation is very smooth and bouncy, and I believe this is the main reason it has such a high rating. However, the writing is terrible. Everything feels forced: the jokes, the drama, the cuteness, the romance... None of this flows naturally; it's not paced well. It's shoved into your face, especially the dramatic parts. While the show did get a couple of laughs from me ... here and there, most jokes just fell flat. The main female character is annoying, has little chemistry with the male MC, is the butt of a recurring joke that is not the least bit amusing (the food), and so to make up for all of this, they have to 'up' the cuteness factor with the animation. Of course, this doesn't work. As for the male MC, I still don't know what makes him unique or memorable. You've seen his type in countless other animes, and this one is just a blend of the usual loner-turned-social that just wants to 'help'. At the beginning, we are led to believe that the story will be a romance involving him and the female MC. But then a third of the way into the story, we have a bait and switch, and we focus heavily on other characters, leaving the romance behind, not to be touched on again until the very end. Speaking of which, the struggle to finish the last episode was real. I was checking the remaining minutes every so often. The tone of the last episode is so drastically different from the next-to-last one: from overly dramatic to chirpy and relaxed. It's jarring and off-putting, even more so when you realize that the writers tried to force the romance back again in the very last minutes. Do not waste your time on this one.
