Isekai Ojisan

After a fatal encounter with a truck, Takafumi Takaoka's uncle, Yousuke "Ojisan" Shibazaki, lies comatose for 17 years. When he finally regains consciousness, Ojisan begins to ramble in a foreign tongue and reveals that he had been transported to a magical world called Gran Bahamal. Takafumi dismisses his uncle's claims as nonsense until an incantation makes a cup of water hover in the air. In a flash of brilliance, the pair creates a YouTube channel to showcase Ojisan's magical abilities.

The responsibility now falls on Takafumi's shoulders to acquaint Ojisan with everything that has transpired during his absence, including getting him up to speed with the internet, new technology, and surprisingly, the outcome of the '90s console war—the result of which was especially distressing for a hardcore SEGA fan. With Ojisan's wisdom from his other world experiences, they grow their YouTube channel and tackle online comments and trolls. The journey of this uncle-nephew duo promises to be anything but conventional.

Story
I’m not going to lie, I had fun with this one. I went in with zero expectations after seeing a random clip online, and I don't regret it. The story is definitely on the shallow side, and the gag of Ojisan being a dense SEGA fan is repetitive, but surprisingly, it never got boring. My only real wish is that the story went a bit further—I’d love to see him either go back to that world or somehow end up with the Elf so they could finally be a happy couple. It’s a bit of a tease, but the comedy carries it.

Visuals
The production quality here ... is honestly overkill for a comedy series like this. The level of detail, the fluid animation, and the special effects used for the magic scenes are impressive. It’s not necessarily a "masterpiece" of art, but it’s a very good-looking anime that clearly had a lot of effort put into it. The contrast between the ugly, realistic world and the flashy magic works really well.

Conclusion
Is it worth watching? If you’re looking for a fantasy-themed comedy that does something different with the isekai genre, I’d definitely recommend it. If you’re not really into dry or cringe-style humor, it might be a 50/50 for you, but for most people, it’s a solid, funny ride.

Mixed Feelings

This was a interesting watch. It's essentially a watch party of the nephew and his friend following the uncle fantasy stories (which he experienced in his "isekai" hospitalized period). Are fantasies more fake if it's being told over a screen, over another screen? It's quite a refreshing take, though my interests in the anime fluctuate across episodes, I think I quite like it.

Its comedy can be tropey, random, niche at times, it's for people who can't hold grudges against failed attempts at comedy to enjoy it, I guess. Though I think it has some really good jokes such as turning into the teacher during the ... debate.

I feel the characters are the representation of tropes itselves, which feels distinctive but also feels extreme that can give out-of-touch vibes making it impossible to care deeply about a character.

I get it. This anime doesn't take itself very seriously. And the way the show choose to display itself signifies it doesn't want to be taken seriously. I like that they sometimes give way for serious moment to bloom, though I'm quite disappointed that they didn't go full bonkers on the last fight (which they tried to be serious, I just hope it to be more serious and to come more suddenly).

In the end, I think it's a good show. Cute characters. Funny unc crazy about ancient stuffs which I couldn't give a shit about. I felt a bond when I'm also invested in the uncle fantasies stories, making me a member of the uncle watch party. So to answer the question, Fantasy does feel fake if it being told over 2 screens. But does feeling of authenticity matter, really? As long as it's enjoyable, anything goes for me.

The label "Isekai" has become synonymous with " it gets me an anime deal" in Japan or something; because without it, this series would have not gotten one.

This series was so bad that the TV network had to lie about the delays to protect the studio.


Reflecting on the title, if you change the title to: "I Found Out My Uncle is a Wizard," absolutely nothing changes. The adventures in the "other world" could easily be substituted with mundane occurrences from the uncle's life as a young wizard, and the impact would remain unchanged.

It's a missed opportunity for meaningful storytelling and a disappointing execution ... of a potentially intriguing concept.
