Serial Experiments Lain

Lain Iwakura, an awkward and introverted fourteen-year-old, is one of the many girls from her school to receive a disturbing email from her classmate Chisa Yomoda—the very same Chisa who recently committed suicide. Lain has neither the desire nor the experience to handle even basic technology; yet, when the technophobe opens the email, it leads her straight into the Wired, a virtual world of communication networks similar to what we know as the internet. Lain's life is turned upside down as she begins to encounter cryptic mysteries one after another. Strange men called the Men in Black begin to appear wherever she goes, asking her questions and somehow knowing more about her than even she herself knows. With the boundaries between reality and cyberspace rapidly blurring, Lain is plunged into more surreal and bizarre events where identity, consciousness, and perception are concepts that take on new meanings.

Written by Chiaki J. Konaka, whose other works include Texhnolyze, Serial Experiments Lain is a psychological avant-garde mystery series that follows Lain as she makes crucial choices that will affect both the real world and the Wired. In closing one world and opening another, only Lain will realize the significance of their presence.

(Spoiler alert ahead though nothing major just charaterisation and some plot points)
Serial Experiments Lain is possibly the best anime I’ve ever watched. To be fair its got many issues— to some it may be difficult to understand could be boring or slow but to me it is perhaps the only example of a masterpiece series.

To start Its atmosphere is absolutely amazing, if i had to compress it into one word id say: derealisation, the anime often using contrast and clashing colours of white and black, this paired with the fact that there was little to no music instead being substituted by a quiet yet ... deafening electronic hum that made certain scenes feel alive yet dead and incite a eerie feeling of dread.
It felt like the creators knew exactly what they wanted to go for and executed it perfectly which is a hard feat.

Lain’s character is equally amazing being the absolute main focus here, her antisocial and rather detached character fitting the tone of the anime perfectly.
The background characters are lacking though id say it’s fair because Lain is as mentioned before absolutely the main focus with the characters only adding to Lain’s reality.

Another reason i enjoy Lain’s character so much is because she isn’t a static character, not only does she change throughout the series— she also has different versions of herself that behave differently and serve as sometimes polar opposites to the normal Lain.
This creates a layer of unpredictability, not knowing whether it’s the normal Lain or perhaps a different Lain adding more to the confusion and dread.

The overall plot is.. fragmented to say the least. In the beginning it gives you almost nothing, explaining almost everything in the latter half of the series. I watched the anime in full focus even taking notes every episode because i liked it so much, and i barely understood it. If you want to truly understand Lain watch it in your language sub or dub, and don’t do anything else while watching.
This series is one of those animes that require your full devoted attention or it wont make sense to you. The themes Lain explores, identity, connection and loneliness, are simple in concept, yet Lain expands upon them so well.
The Identity crisis Lain suffers in the latter half of the series which leads Lain into a life of loneliness in the final episode is done very well, making you ask the same question as Lain: Who is Lain? What is Lain?

The theme of connection is also felt and shown heavily whether by the constant imagery of tangled, interconnected wires or Lain on the wired and actual human connection through her friends.
It’s an overarching theme thats impossible to ignore, the show prompting you to ask, is physical connection the same as digital? Or perhaps it’s identical, already fused.

Another theme i could consider present is the theme of Godhood or religion, the anime quite literally describing Lain as a god, omnipotent; everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Yet she acts more as a messiah, sacrificing her physical existence to save humanity from the Wired. Masami Eiri, the self-proclaimed god tells her that she has existed long before the wired, lying dormant waiting for it to be created only being a vessel for her. In a way she begins as nothing, and by the end she returns to nothing through her reset.

I wont spoil how it ends, but know this: the ending is absolute peak. It shows a different side of Lain, her entire character being built for this moment, her severing the weight dragging her down, her other personalities. She achieves this by freeing herself from the wired and perhaps partly freeing herself from humanity as a whole. It is a bittersweet climax to the whole series and crisis that Lain faces: winning but costing her everything including in a way her life.

In conclusion; id recommend Lain but it is not for everyone. You don’t have to be “smart” to understand it as some people say, you have to be attentive. It is complex but by paying attention you slowly unravel the beautiful plot that is Lain. Truly i think it is the perfect example of what a 10/10 psychological drama should be.

Mixed Feelings

First off, the intro "Duvet" is outstanding. Watch that even if you don't pick up the show.

Serial Experiments Lain is a dark sci-fi exploring the effects of the internet and computers on people's lives.
I didn't particularly agree with the grim direction. But the show is interesting to watch. There are a few scenes with very grim implications so if you're sensitive to that you might not want to watch at all.

For example, every time Lain goes to school she passes through these dead areas of the street with loud, humming electrical wires above. And maybe something or other weird detail that isn't always there. It's ... just bland and lifeless, like all the life was sucked out of walking to school.

The ending definitely gets a little more interesting than the rest of the show. But overall I don't remember much from watching this besides the weird atmosphere.

Review in English – Serial Experiments Lain

Honestly, I didn’t really enjoy this anime. It made me sleepy at times, and it’s extremely confusing. Watching 10 out of 13 episodes without truly understanding what’s going on feels very strange.

That said, the concept and the overall vibe of the anime are a solid 10/10. Especially considering the time it was made — before the 2000s — it was definitely ahead of its time.

However, that doesn’t change the fact that I personally didn’t enjoy it that much and found it way too confusing. Unlike Neon Genesis Evangelion, where you can get into the characters’ mindset and slowly understand ... what’s happening, Lain doesn’t really give you that same connection or clarity. For me, it was hard to fully understand or immerse myself in the story.

Sinceramente, eu não gostei muito do anime. Ele me deu sono em vários momentos e é extremamente confuso. Assistir cerca de 10 dos 13 episódios sem entender quase nada do que está acontecendo é uma sensação bem estranha.

Por outro lado, a proposta e a “brisa” do anime são nota 10, principalmente se levar em conta a época em que foi feito, antes dos anos 2000. Sem dúvida, foi algo muito à frente do seu tempo.

Mesmo assim, isso não muda o fato de que eu, pessoalmente, não gostei tanto e achei a experiência muito confusa. Diferente de Evangelion, onde dá para entrar na pira dos personagens e, aos poucos, entender o que está acontecendo, Lain não proporciona esse mesmo nível de conexão ou compreensão. Para mim, foi difícil realmente entender e me envolver com a história.
