Lady Georgie

An Australian farmer returns home from the woods with a baby named Georgie. The girl lives ignoring the terrible secret hidden in the golden bracelet on her hand. Her "Father" and Her "brothers", Abel and Arthur, love her dearly, but her "mother" considers her an intruder and doesn't manage to open her heart to the girl. Georgie grows up into a beautiful young girl, and both her "brothers" are deeply in love with her. Not knowing the truth, Georgie eventually falls in love with the handsome grandson of the British Governor. When Mother finally reveals the truth to her and condemns the girl for being an exile's daughter, Georgie leaves for Britain in search of her real parents - and for her love, who has also left Australia. Abel and Arthur follow her and the three are thrown into the cruel world of London aristocracy, lies and intrigues.

The richness of animation, the vastness of location and the fairylands of the heart. These things permeate and encompass the long lost tale of Lady Georgie. There are so many beautiful things to discover in the older world of anime. Lady Georgie is one of these presents. It is a tale of romance, the entanglement of fate, mans desire and the perplexities of maternal nature. At first glance, one may think the anime is superficial in its intent to portray a triangular love story, but this would be an ... incorrect assumption.

There are many deeper themes that are garlanded within the flowery meadow of Lady Georgie. but only after and during watching should the viewer be enabled to see them. In this review I deliberately wished to avoid mentioning what is so moving about this anime. Because only by watching it will you understand.

This is a romantic anime in many ways. The painting style, the sensitive, delicate, yet realistic portrayal of human emotion, and the almost Shakespearean portrayal of love makes "Lady Georgie" a pure treasure when compared to other shoujo anime of its type. The maturity of this anime in terms of sophistication and elegance cannot be overstated. The is no rushed moments. Each character has depth. Each moment has been engraved beautifully with every scene filled with sweetness. The time has been taken to deliver an enlivened masterpiece. The story is very rich and really feels like a true voyage. It is sophisticated because it does not concede to cliché. There is a sense of realism in every scene, even though it is still a fairytale of sorts. It is old fashioned in nature, and feels very heartwarming and rare because of this. It is quaint yet magical. It is dearer than anything that attempts to be like it.

When deciding at what points to start and end a screenplay, the old writing advice is, "In late, out early." This can be difficult when a story has significant events that happen years before the meat of the plot. In Lady Georgie, this comes in the shape of the mystery around the identity of the titular girl's birth parents, how she came to be adopted, the kind of life she had growing up on a farm in 19th Century Australia, and the inner conflict of the two adoptive brothers who are secretly in love with her and yet have sworn to never tell her that ... they're not blood relatives. Some stories would start late and then address the backstory through flashbacks, but this show instead runs closer to chronological order, starting when Georgie is about five and following her through to when her life takes a major turn at fifteen, following an encounter with a handsome young aristocrat.

As I understand it, this whole section of the story is original to the anime. What's surprising is how much time the show spends on it. The plot of the source manga apparently doesn't come in until halfway through the anime's 45-episode run. While Georgie's early years aren't untouched by tragedy or strife, there's a marked shift in tone once the story's gears eventually start turning. Despite having aired over a single year, the show broadly feels like it's aimed at an audience of the same age as Georgie is at any given point. Aside from a few key events, the first dozen episodes have a childish, slice-of-life feel, and there's a whimsical air to much of the drama. Personally, I found those opening dozen episodes a slog, which I say in my official capacity as a middle-aged man watching a cartoon aimed at young girls. But, by the time the show enters its latter half, my doubts were long gone, as Lady Georgie transforms into a classical shojo romance with increasingly intense drama. Even the art and direction take a radically darker turn later on. Hailing from an era when such stories could lean towards tragedy instead of a happy ending, there's a real sense of tension as the stakes are raised, and the overall focus and direction of the story ended up surprising me.

So the question is: does this plot structure work? To a certain extent, yes. By giving us so much time with the characters early on, the growth of their relationships and interactions feels natural, and the plight of each becomes more sympathetic. But it's pushed too far. By front-loading so much filler before the inciting incident, there's a pervading sense that we're just in a holding pattern while waiting for the story to take off. What we end up with is a show that risks causing people to drop it before it gets going, which would be a shame because it's worth sticking around for.

That leaves the tricky situation of how to score a show like this. The latter half is a solid 8/10, but it feels like an effort to get that far. There's an argument that it should be judged by how well it would work for its target demographic, but even then there's the dissonance between the opening dozen episodes feeling like they're aimed at much younger viewers than the later ones. I suspect the aim was to replicate the decades-spanning scope of some 70s shojo classics like Candy Candy, where the original multi-year publication/broadcast schedules would have seen the readers growing up alongside the protagonist, but it doesn't quite work in a show that only lasted a year. All things considered, it evens out at a 7/10.

Coincidentally, I finished watching the show as I hear that Discotek's release has just gone out of print (Jan 2026), so grab it before it hits scalper pricing on eBay if you're interested. It's definitely worth a look for fans of romance or shojo drama. I would only say that if you find the early episodes underwhelming, then you can safely skip episodes 5-14 without missing anything.

Mixed Feelings

Disclaimer: I was able to watch it partially thanks to some person that provided it somewhere but unfortunately it has already disappeared a long time ago so I'd recommend reading the manga that is available in English (see the manga adaptation on this website). So I wrote this review before I realized I actually couldn't complete the series and had to finish it with the manga. Sorry in advance to those who had the hope to still watch it. I have checked and still haven't found it online.

My curious character couldn´t avoid watching it all from start to end and more than once I wanted to slap or punish some bad character. It was the time when bullies were the perfect antagonist to make the perfect cocktail in children/teenager anime story and that wouldn´t be less. Difference is, the antagonists weren´t some childish same-age neighbour/classmates. They were real adults, with their darkness and secret intentions.

The love-triangle wouldn´t dissapoint me one bit, as that was the main issue here. The cringiness and cheesiness wouldn´t keep me away yet as there were many special details that concerned real life Aussie History.

It was a little long, like many other similar stories, but at least it got to the very end and had its own conclussion. I wasn´t dissapointed at all, it was what it was for this kind of story. What let me wide-eyed was the very last chapter. It's up to you if you want to find out or not.
