Suki tte Ii na yo.

Friends will only let you down—that is the sad truth Mei Tachibana lives with, ever since she was wrongfully blamed for the death of a class pet by her so-called friends in grade school. Since then, she has stayed away from people in order to avoid ever being hurt again. However, Mei's life begins to change drastically when a misunderstanding in high school causes her to encounter popular student Yamato Kurosawa.

Yamato finds her intriguing and insists on being her friend, even though Mei wants nothing to do with him. But when a dangerous situation ends with Yamato kissing Mei to save her from the unwanted attention of a stalker, Mei begins to develop feelings for him. On the heels of her discovery that their feelings are mutual, they start dating and she gains not only a boyfriend, but friends as well. Mei, however, finds it very hard to adapt to this new lifestyle, especially in expressing her true feelings towards Yamato.

Throughout misunderstandings of their new relationship, each other, and the attentions of other girls, Mei and Yamato slowly grow closer and learn the true meaning of those three little words: "I love you."

Ohh what a sucker i am for a REALISTC love story ૮₍´ ꒳`₎ა Honestly, "Say i love you" Truly warmed my heart ₍ᐢᐢ₎ It's sweet yet it hits you with those bittersweet slice of life emotions! I'm really into a good and realistic slice of life high school romance because i feel most high school romances set up very unlikely standards ...I also think that character development is KEY when it comes to a good romance anime 𓆩❤︎𓆪 Also, im a sucker for a "non-slow burn" relationship because im very impatient hehe... Anyways, i really like this story and feel like you will too, so ... give it a try ₍^. .^₎⟆

"It’s not that I hate people. I just feel better when they’re not around." Thus begins a romance not with a kiss, but with a kick, literally. Say "I Love You" unfolds its story around emotional isolation and the gradual process of learning how to trust another person. Rather than presenting romance as immediate chemistry, the narrative focuses on the slow dismantling of personal walls formed through past betrayal and social alienation. The story follows Mei Tachibana, a high school girl who has spent most of life avoiding close relationships. Childhood experiences left Mei with the belief that friendship often leads to betrayal, and self-protection ... becomes the guiding principle of daily life. As a result, Mei enters high school without meaningful friendships and rarely engages with classmates. Quiet routines and emotional distance allow life to continue without the risk of disappointment. This isolation begins to change after an unexpected encounter with Yamato Kurosawa, one of the most popular students in school. Yamato initially appears to belong to a social world completely separate from Mei’s withdrawn existence. Confidence, popularity, and constant attention from classmates create the image of someone who effortlessly navigates social life. The first meeting between Mei and Yamato occurs through a misunderstanding that results in Mei kicking him in self defense, yet this unusual introduction sparks Yamato’s curiosity rather than hostility. Yamato becomes interested in Mei precisely because of the authenticity missing from many of his social interactions. While most classmates admire his popularity, Mei treats him with blunt honesty and emotional distance. This difference gradually leads Yamato to pursue a friendship that slowly evolves into romantic affection. For Mei, however, accepting that affection requires confronting the deeply rooted fear that trusting someone will inevitably lead to abandonment.

As the relationship develops, the narrative explores how two individuals with different emotional experiences attempt to understand one another. Yamato’s open personality encourages Mei to gradually step outside her emotional isolation. Small milestones such as exchanging phone numbers, spending time together after school, or introducing Mei to his circle of friends become meaningful moments of growth. Each step represents Mei’s cautious attempt to believe that genuine connection may exist. The story also introduces several supporting characters whose experiences reflect different perspectives on love and insecurity. Aiko Muto struggles with jealousy and resentment toward Mei, partly because of complicated feelings toward Yamato. Although hints of personal loneliness appear within his character, deeper exploration of his motivations and vulnerabilities remains relatively brief. The series also relies on several familiar romance tropes that occasionally feel predictable. Jealous rivals, misunderstandings between couples, and sudden emotional confrontations appear throughout the narrative. While these elements contribute to dramatic tension, they sometimes follow expected patterns that reduce the sense of narrative surprise. Another weakness emerges in the pacing of certain conflicts. Emotional problems occasionally appear and resolve within a short span of episodes, creating the impression that complex issues receive quick resolutions. Situations involving jealousy, rumors, or personal insecurity sometimes fade before their emotional consequences fully develop.

From a production perspective, animation by Zexcs adopts a relatively simple visual style that prioritizes character expression over elaborate movement. Facial reactions and quiet dialogue scenes dominate the presentation, reflecting the introspective nature of the story. While this approach suits the intimate tone of the narrative, the animation rarely reaches moments of striking visual creativity. Color design frequently uses soft and subdued tones that mirror the emotional vulnerability of the characters. Background environments such as classrooms, parks, and residential streets emphasize the ordinary atmosphere of teenage life. The visual direction focuses on creating a calm setting where personal conversations become the central dramatic element. Music serves as a gentle emotional layer throughout the series. Soft instrumental arrangements accompany many reflective scenes, reinforcing the sense of quiet intimacy between characters. Rather than dominating the atmosphere, the soundtrack supports the story’s focus on personal dialogue and emotional hesitation. Overall, Say "I Love You" presents a romance built around the fragile process of learning to trust after years of emotional distance. Through Mei’s gradual transformation from isolation toward connection, the story explores how vulnerability becomes necessary for meaningful relationships. While predictable romantic tropes and uneven character exploration limit the narrative’s depth, the sincerity of its emotional journey allows the series to resonate as a gentle portrayal of first love and personal healing.

Anyway, keep in mind that no opinion is ever purely objective, and every perspective remains open to discussion. Even so, each viewpoint still holds its own value. I dont know how you guys like this show but this is the cringiest and most disturbing romance anime I have seen among series with a score of 7 or above. The male character is the definition of manipulation and the way he acts in different situations is so cringey. He is like a child who know how to deceive his parents, acting like he is the victim and as if nothing that happened was his fault. The most cringy part is how this girl can stand this guy ? (The answer is all the character including the girl are just retarded) This show is ... not well-written and definitely not deserving a score of 7. This show just a classic, random high-school romance that was forced into happy ending. (English is not my native language so, sorry if the text has any grammar mistakes)
