This film can be accused of being cruel. And sometimes it is. There's a hatred that runs through the film. It's an undercurrent that runs through all the drafted men, directed entirely at the enlisted staff. Our protagonist are all drafted men, eking out what enjoyment they can in a bloodstained landscape, sadistic or otherwise. The climatic football game comes off as fantasy, with a manicured lawn and cheering spectators. A reminder of the American life they were pulled away…
Errol Flynn! I should have seen this coming but this is a very pro-British Propaganda film with a speech at the end that almost directly confronts Hitler through his allegory in the film, King Philip of Spain. Very well shot. Great sets. More political intrigue than I expected from a swashbuckler. Not sure about how much time passes between events near the end because those ships seem to travel very fast.
