Describe what problem this solves and why this would be valuable to many users

Currently the tile view crops an image down to a 500px square, which obviously leads to missing parts of the image in the tile preview. It would be nice to have a way to preserve aspect ratio in the tile view.

Describe the solution you'd like

While there are many different options, I think a quick solution would be to use a thumbnail of the correct aspect ratio (the 720px ones were suggested in the chat) and then scale the image to the tile size in CSS. This would lead to some dead space to keep the tile square, but that would be fine.
