Common questions

Subscriptions

  • Why is there no free plan?

With our subscription plans, you can invite unlimited Viewers to your Workspace for free. Viewers can browse and comment on designs in their web browser, and even inspect files and download assets for developer handoff.

We also offer students and teachers a free Workspace with 1 Editor seat, and institutions a free Workspace with multiple seats – depending on requirements. You can find out more and request your free workspace on our Sketch for Education page.

Beyond free Viewers, and besides our Education offer, we have no plans to offer an entirely free plan.

Our business model is simple — we sell our product at a fair price — and we’ve been profitable since day one. We believe this commitment to long-term sustainability is a responsibility to our customers, who can trust that we’ll continue to be here and support their work, as we have for more than 10 years.

Offering a free plan inevitably leads to unpaid costs (these plans still require storage, bandwidth, support and more). Most products with a free plan will gradually remove features or apply limitations in an effort to force customers to move to a paid tier. Or they’ll seek investment to support that plan and make decisions that don’t align with the needs of their customers. That doesn’t feel right to us.

Our focus is on adding value to our product with consistent improvements and new features, not finding ways to remove it for customers who we’ve enticed with a free plan.

  • Do you offer discounts for non-profit organizations (NPOs)

If your non-profit organization qualifies, you can enjoy a 50% discount on either a yearly Standard subscription or a Mac-only license purchase.

What are the requirements for an NPO discount?

Your organization must be officially recognized in its country of residence by an authorized government agency. Please get in touch with us using your official organization email address and provide the official website along with an attachment of the government-issued NPO certificate.

Contact us and we’ll be happy to help further review your application.

Who is not eligible to get an NPO discount?

Here’s a list of organizations that don’t qualify for the discount:

    • NPOs that have not obtained a recognized status in their country
    • Individuals
    • Political or lobbyist organizations
    • Schools, colleges, and universities — check out our free Education plan instead!
    • Private foundations
    • Government organizations or agencies, including international governmental organizations and United Nations Entities
    • Government-funded healthcare organizations and research laboratories

Lastly, to qualify for the discount, the NPO’s mission must not advocate, support, or practice discrimination based on age, ethnicity, gender, national origin, disability, race, body size, religion, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic background.

  • How can I cancel my trial or subscription?

As an Admin, you can cancel your subscription at any time from the web app. Here’s how to:

    1. Go to Sketch, log in as an Admin and click on the Switch Workspace icon in the top left corner of the sidebar. Make sure your Workspace name is showing.
    2. Click on the Settings icon at the top of the left sidebar, then click on Billing.
    3. If you added your billing details at sign up, click Cancel Subscription and confirm your choice in the window that will appear on your screen.

Note: If you did not add billing details at sign up, you can either let the trial period automatically cancel on the end date or delete the Workspace. If you want to delete the trial Workspace and your user account, please follow our guide to deleting your account.

If you no longer have access to the Admin email address or need help with the cancelation, please contact our support team so we can help.

What happens when I cancel my subscription?

When you cancel your subscription, you’ll continue to have access to Sketch until the end of your billing period. The confirmation prompt will provide the exact end date. After cancellation, your documents will be in read-only mode, and you’ll still be able to download them for up to 90 days. Editors within your Workspace will no longer be able to open, edit, or upload documents. Additionally, you won’t be able to add or edit members during this period.

Will my documents stay in my Workspace forever?

We’ll permanently delete your Workspace and all documents 90 days after the cancellation or expiration of your subscription; these actions cannot be undone. For more information, please refer to our Terms of Service and the article about expired subscriptions. If you delete your Workspace manually in the meantime, the documents cannot be restored.

What if I change my mind?

You can reactivate a cancelled or expired subscription within 90 days from the cancellation or expiration date, as long as you have not manually deleted your Workspace in the meantime. Contact our support team and we’ll help you with the next steps.

  • Can I switch my subscription’s billing plan?

You can choose to switch your billing plan. The switch depends on the billing plan you’ve subscribed to and the billing cycle.

    Monthly subscriptions:

You may switch at any time. We recommend choosing our yearly billing plan as it will save you money over a 12-month period. Here’s how to:

    1. Go to Sketch, sign in as an Admin or Finance and click on the Switch Workspace icon in the top left corner of the sidebar — Make sure your Workspace name is showing.
    2. Click on the Settings icon at the top of the left sidebar, then click on Billing.
    3. Next to the Current Plan click on the Edit… button where you will be able to change to a yearly billing plan.

Please note that the credit card on file will be charged automatically once the plan is updated, which will initiate a new invoice and a new billing date.

    Yearly subscriptions:

You may change to the Monthly plan near the end of the billing cycle. Please contact our support team, and we’ll be happy to help you with your requirements.

If you are using a subscription purchased from the Mac App Store, you can change your subscription directly in the Mac App Store on your device. For more information, visit Apple Support.

  • What are my payment options?

We offer credit or debit card payments only for Standard subscription and Mac-only license purchases. At this time, we do not have plans to implement other payment methods. All payments are securely processed by Stripe.

If you need more flexibility in payment methods or terms, our Enterprise subscription can help. Please contact us and we’ll be happy to discuss more options.

General questions

  • Is Sketch only available as a subscription?

No. You can still get a Mac-only license if you don’t need the web app and only want to use the Mac app to design. However, you’d need to save all your work locally and would miss out on loads of handy collaborative features.

    Get a license

A subscription on a yearly plan gets you a whole lot more: real-time collaboration in the Mac app, commenting, handoff, and a shared Workspace to bring all your people and documents together. That’s because we’ve evolved Sketch to be more than the Mac app. It’s now a complete platform for design and collaboration, combining the best native Mac editor with tools that work in any web browser.

  • Where does Sketch store my data?

Sketch and our payment providers are hosted on Amazon Web Services, which holds multiple certifications for its data centers — including ISO 27001 compliance, PCI Certification, and SOC2 Certification. Learn more at AWS Security and AWS Compliance.

The data is located in AWS us-east-1 across multiple availability zones (which correspond to several physical locations around North Virginia). See our subprocessor list for details on where Sketch data is processed and stored.

Our Private Cloud offering gives you a choice of hosting locations in the US and EU .
