This is a follow up to #2244 and should do the trick to get #2148 also into 42.2.
I have cherry-picked 7bdc4e0 , 12c7fff and 8b6afc0 from master into a branch based on
release/42.2. I had to resolve two merge conflicts manual and removed a changelog entry from an unrelated change.Please let me know if things are still missing. Please also look at this carefully, I mostly let git do all the magic.
