Ready player one, two, three: Twitch comes to Tumblr

We are launching Twitch embeds on web! Simply select the video post option on your dashboard, grab the embed link from the stream you want to share, and paste it into the “Add video from web” field. Click “Post,” and the stream will appear magically on…your post, duh. If you’re a Twitch streamer, you might boost your audience and even make a little pocket money broadcasting here on Tumblr. If you like watching Twitch but want to do more of that from the comfort of your Tumblr dash, well, now you can. So, giddy up: we hope your consoles are on and your headsets poised.

We’re back with another Pride 2019 Spotlight. This time we had the pleasure of interviewing Twitch Ambassador and role-play content creator Nikatine (@nikatineprime). Nikatine is a full-time streamer and co-founder of Transmission Gaming, a community for trans people to get together and play games. We caught up with her about the video game community and what pride means to her.

How would you describe yourself in just a few sentences?

I’m Nikatine, Twitch Ambassador and role-play content creator. I play a lot of over-the-top characters, and I’m a full-time Twitch streamer. I’m also a trans woman!

What is Transmission Gaming? 

Transmission Gaming is an awesome community for trans people to get together and play games. I helped found the server a couple of years ago. We were featured on the big HBomberguy charity stream, and now have around 2.5k people in our community. There’s also a Twitch Stream Team!

How have video games allowed you to help others in your community? 

Video Games were my very first introduction to exploring my gender identity; getting to play a female character in games was so important to me as a kid. As an adult, Transmission Gaming has allowed me to connect and play with other trans people in a safe environment where we don’t have to worry about our voices or appearances. It is extremely fulfilling!

What does Pride mean to you? 

Pride is about strength. It’s about finding that drive inside you to walk tall for those who can’t just yet. It’s about setting an example and being proud of what makes you unique. Pride is, and always has been, about love.

How can we continue to support the LGBTQIA+ community?

Unfortunately, the LGBTQ+ community is still silenced in many parts of the web. The best thing anyone can possibly do for us is to simply listen, and take action in service of, not against, the queer community.

Do you stan Connor from Detroit: Become Human? Our final spotlight goes out to all of Connor Army fans on Tumblr! We caught up with Bryan Dechart who voices Connor from Detroit: Become Human and talked all about the Connor Army and how he connects with the fandom. 

Bryan, do you know about your Connor Army on Tumblr?

Oh, I know about the Connor Army! Do you know about the Connor Army?! I feel like everybody here might know about the Connor Army. They’re very enthusiastic about Detroit and super, super grateful for their support!

Do you ever look into the fandom and what’s the best thing you’ve seen so far?

Oh man, we get so much wonderful fan art. We’ve been doing a stream on our Twitch channel called Fan Art Friday were we try to share as much of it as possible because it’s tricky to keep track of every hashtag and every time I get tagged in somebody’s art but, a lot of really really creative work from around the world. It’s been really exciting to see all the different styles and interpretations of the same characters, what they look like and represented in different communities around the world.

What would you like to say to your fans on Tumblr?

Hey Tumblr, this Pride Spotlight is no fluke—she’s serving you lewks, kooks, & spooks! DEERE is a partnered Twitch broadcaster with a focus on drag content and scary video games. As a proud TwitchCon Ambassador—someone from the community selected for showcasing positivity and diversity—DEERE founded the Stream Queens team. How do you bridge gaming and queer interests in your streams?

As a kid, gaming was an escape for me. Naturally, I would go for the super powerful, badass women in fighting games. My parents are huge fans of drag and queer culture like Divine and Rocky Horror, so I started to be super inspired by the attitudes, fashions, and storylines of queer characters and strong women. I’m very lucky because not everyone has an upbringing like that, and I am forever grateful and indebted to my parents for instilling values of acceptance in my upbringing. I was encouraged to express myself authentically from a young age, so I thought, hey, why not play video games in drag—effectively intertwining my two favorite passions! Bam!

What does Pride mean to you? 

First and foremost, Pride means unapologetically being yourself and being happy with yourself. When you are happy and kind, others feel it, and it can rub off on them too. It’s also about showing appreciation and giving back. I’m lucky to have supportive family, friends, and fans because I know there are people out there who have it much harder. That’s why Pride is also about supporting your community. This year Twitch is partnering with The Trevor Project, a non-profit organization aiming to provide crisis intervention and suicide prevention services for young members of the LGBTQ+ community. I am supporting this cause in my streams for the whole of June.

How can we continue to support the LGBTQIA+ community?

We can all make this world a better place to live in by showing kindness and understanding. When it comes to the queer community, representation and visibility are key. Pride is about equality, something the LGBTQ+ community hasn’t quite reached yet. So, when given the chance, we need to prop each other up so we can say, “we are HERE!” It’s important to showcase the fact that many different types of people enjoy fun activities, such as gaming—especially if the avenue is dominated by a certain ethnicity, gender, orientation, or class.  That way everyone has a role model and can be inspired to pursue their passions. I’m hoping that through my drag and video game interests, I’m showing lots of people that you can play games and be authentic about your identity at the same time!

Is there a gaming-inspired drag cosplay you always wanted to do but haven’t yet?

I have cosplayed as the Pokémon Jynx, the Great Fairy from Zelda, and Poison from Street Fighter so far. I would love to do more Pokémon, Birdo from the Mario series, and Jeanne from Bayonetta 2!

We caught up with actress Amelia Rose Blaire and Twitch streamer Bryan Dechart at San Diego Comic-Con to ask them questions and turn their answers into a dream movie poster in a new series of posts we’re calling SDCC BioGIFs. The married couple, who celebrated their one year anniversary last month, did not disappoint.

If there was a biopic made about your life, what would it be called?

Amelia & Bryan: Play the Positive.

Who would play you? 

Bryan: Tom Holland.

Amelia: Emma Stone.

If Connor was attending Comic-Con, who would he cosplay as?

Bryan: Inspector Gadget.

If you could have any fictional character be a guest on your channel, who would it be and why?

Amelia: My Little Pony, Firefly, just because she was close to my heart when I was little. I loved—LOVED—My Little Pony, so if I got to meet her it would be like meeting my childhood self.

Bettynixx is a recently partnered variety streamer on Twitch. She has been streaming for about two years now, and you’ll find her playing almost any genre, including RPGs, shooters, and fighters. She also mixes in some informative streams about haircare, skincare, and makeup.

What has been the best “streaming moment” that you have experienced?

There are so many moments that I could name the best because I have a very supportive community. However, if I had to choose, I would say the best moment was when I was ready to give up streaming. I was constantly encouraged to stream, and when I finally decided to stream, I was showered with gifts, donations, and raids from some of my favorite streamers. It was a very emotional moment, lol!

How would you describe the Black Girl Gamers community?

I would describe BGG as a gaming group that other Black girl gamers should give a try at least once. It’s a very informative, supportive, and safe community for Black women to find other gamers like themselves for any gaming genre. Being a part of the group and a member of the stream team has been a great experience for me.

How can we disrupt the gaming industry so there is an increase of women of color being celebrated?

We could continue shining a light on the Black women within the industry that are just as excellent in their craft as non-POC. The Black Girl Gamers Online Summit, for example, did an excellent job of showcasing Black women streamers, voice actors, and employees at AAA gaming companies. This type of event should happen multiple times throughout the year—to show that we are an integral part of the industry and that gaming companies should recognize it.

How do you see #BlackExcellence365 being celebrated in your streaming experience?

I make sure that I highlight other Black streamers and content creators that I enjoy. Sometimes I will have them join me for games, or watch some of their content on stream. As #BlackExcellence365 explains, we are not a monolith. Other creators may offer an experience that I cannot. We are diverse, and I encourage my community to follow those that I highlight.

What is your dream for your gaming and streaming career? Where do you hope to be by next year?

My dream is to be recognized as one of the biggest Black woman streamers across streaming platforms. I’m still working on the deets of how to get there, but we have already reached one of my goals: becoming a Twitch partner. By next year, I hope to have a larger audience and community that people find safe and inclusive.

Indie Game Spotlight: Aeolis Tournament

Need a new game to play with others? This Indie Game Spotlight features Aeolis Tournament, an action party game for up to eight players, coming up for Steam and Nintendo Switch. It has various game modes that are all based on a clever one-button mechanic. Characters use an air cannon to control the power of the wind and affect their surroundings. 

We spoke to Sébastien Gauvin, who describes himself as the Biz Dev guy, although every guy on the team contributes. Originally an artist skilled in animation, VFX, UX/UI, and other Unity stuff, he takes care of administration and business tasks on the side, doing “a bit of everything, you know, the usual when you’re a small indie studio of 3 people.”

Can you tell us a bit about the different game modes in Aeolis Tournament?

For the initial release, there’ll be six modes (although we plan on adding more afterward). There are two different free-for-all games; there’s a version of soccer, but in a volcano, with different types of balls after each goal; there’s dodgeball, but with timed bombs; there’s a very hard-to-master ice hockey game, where characters use their air cannon to push the puck but also to navigate on the slippery ice. And then there’s one unannounced mode! All these game modes can be played either on time-based rules or with points or rounds-based rules (last man standing, elimination dodgeball, first to seven goals, etc.).

How do you hope the game will change “game night?”

There’s no board game, so there’s much more time playing the game. It’s easy enough to pick up, but it gets competitive real fast. The game modes are deep enough that you can become good at them and develop your skills—which is not always the focus of party games. The primary way to play is in a tournament mode where you get ranking points after each game, but there’s also a lot of possible customization. Since there are both free-for-all and team-based games, it’s a mix of co-op and competition. It is also playable locally with eight Joy-Cons on Switch, something very few games do. But the most important thing is that the games are very intense, very engaging and very fun.

What are some other features we can expect in the game?

We tried to focus on stuff that often gets requested in party games (or that they get criticized for not having), and some nice features that add replayability. You can play solo or use offline and online cross-platform play, there are a lot of customizable game settings, as well as random chaos events for each game mode to spice up gameplay. And achievements reward with in-game currency, which you can use to buy character customization items and skins.

Which character in the game do you most identify with?

There’s a character I named after my own cat, Effy, so I guess I can’t answer anything else :). There’s another character, coming up after we launch, who I like quite a lot but can’t reveal yet!

Aeolis Tournament will be available on Steam and Nintendo Switch! The best way to get ready for its release in May is to wishlist it on Steam.
