The narrative around Chennai Super Kings in the lead-up to this fixture has revolved quite a bit around boarding gates. CSK confirmed that MS Dhoni had been booked to travel to Lucknow, briefly raising hopes of a long-awaited return from the calf injury that has kept the veteran sidelined.
In the end, he never boarded the flight. Jamie Overton did, only his journey was back to the UK as a troublesome right thigh has ruled him out of IPL 2026. For a side still firmly in the playoff race - a win could push them into the top-four for the first time in IPL 2026, the timing of this latest injury to a key player, who was Player of the Match in the most recent game, could scarcely have been worse.
There are two ways to view CSK's injury-hit campaign. One is to admire the fact that they have remained in contention despite repeated setbacks to key personnel. The other is to wonder whether this was all merely bad luck, or whether some of it could have been anticipated and managed better. Those questions, though, belong to a later date. For now, there is still a season to salvage.
That task becomes trickier without Overton, whose pacy, hard-length deliveries had given CSK both middle-overs control while his batting offered balance to the side. Spencer Johnson, another player who has already spent time injured this season, could now come back into the mix. CSK will also hope that amid compromises to the best team combination, they still keep finding individual contributors, and T20s allow one or two players to bend a game to their will. Urvil Patel offered that last game and CSK will believe the likes of Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dube will soon become central to the late charge to come.
Lucknow Super Giants, by contrast, have fewer dilemmas of this scale having already slipped out of playoff contention. But elimination rarely empties a season of purpose. For players fighting for retention, roles or relevance, these final games can shape the future as much as the present. Rishabh Pant and Justin Langer will expect that urgency to remain, even if the table no longer demands it.

What they said:
"We worked on quite a few areas in thee break and I think it came off really well. Still three games to go, but it is just about keeping it simple [for] as long as possible. I know it's easy to say at times when you're under the pressure or under the pump, but that's our mantra and we are going to stick to it." - Ruturaj Gaikwad
