Show Up for Our Libraries
Libraries are among the most trusted institutions in America, providing opportunity and enrichment at every stage in life. Yet in recent years, libraries have been facing unprecedented challenges – bans on library materials and programs, threats to cut local funding, and state legislation that would criminalize librarians for doing their jobs. And this year, we expect the federal government to continue attempting to cut off its modest but effective support for libraries, from withdrawal of funding for broadband to the elimination of the only source of federal funding for our nation’s 125,000 libraries, the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Our libraries urgently need federal funding to continue.
Libraries are here for us – in schools, on campuses, in cities, in small towns, and beyond. Here are ways you can Show Up #ForOurLibraries:
If you have 5 minutes:
1. Send a Message to Your U.S. Senator!
The two "Dear Appropriator" letters by Senator Jack Reed (RI) are now available for signatures from other Senators. We need as many signatures on these letters as possible to encourage Appropriations Committee members to include library services funds in the budget. And Senators only have until April 17 to sign on!

Don't have Senators but still want to take action today? Please take a moment to support the Right to Read Act, which is critically important for supporting the Freedom to Read in schools nationwide!
2. Check your Senators' Library Support History
Check our Fund Libraries page for the history of your Senators' "Dear Appropriator" letter signatures, which of your U.S. House Representatives signed this year, and more about what we can expect from the federal budget process.

3. Help spread the word on social media or in person.
Follow this link for social media graphics and sample social posts to help get the word out online. You can even research what social media platforms your Congressmembers use regularly and try to tag them in your messages there!

7. Write a letter to the editor (LTE) of your local news outlet. Use our new LTE toolkit to help guide your writing!
8. Read up on the details of why the Institute for Museum and Library Services is so critical across the country, especially in rural and indigenous communities.
9. Arrange a congressional tour of your library, using ALA’s guides for in-person and virtual tours.
10. Schedule an in-district office meeting with your Congressmember’s staff or work on building a relationship with them.
