I have rolled out a big update to the website. Membership registration and renewals are now handled through the new site. The old site (at members.accu.org) is no longer being used for membership-related activities, and is no longer available for use. Everything a member needs to do can now be done through the new site (accu.org).

Membership registration is available through the Membership Information page, accessible via the JOIN! links on each page. Look for the links at 'To join, continue here.'
Membership renewals can be done from your Membership Subscription page, accessible via the Member's Account / Subscription Details link at the bottom of the page when you are logged in - look for the Renew button next to your Subscription Status.
Going forward, the membership system will maintain all of your past invoices, not just your most recent invoice. Look for your past invoices on your Membership Subscriptions page when you are logged in.

Please report any problems to [email protected]">[email protected] or [email protected]">[email protected]. Please supply as much information as possible about what you were trying to do when you encountered the problem as well as the date and time at which the problem occurred.

Please do NOT use accu-general to discuss problems with the site. accu-general is available to non-members, and is not the appropriate place for those discussions.

The first batch of 15 videos is live now, with new videos added each week as they’re delivered by our video production team. In total, 60 full-length sessions and 31 lightning talks will be released.

Each talk remains exclusive to ACCU members for at least 30 days before being published publicly on the ACCU YouTube channel.

Lightning talks will be added after the main session videos are uploaded.

A Special General Meeting will be be held on July 14th, 2025 at 19:00 BST, for the purpose of electing a new Chair. Dom Davis has been nominated for the position. Per the ACCU Constitution, Section 5.3.3, "Any member of the Association can stand as a candidate for election to any role on the committee. Any such member shall notify the Secretary in writing (letter or email), including names of a nominating member and a seconder, on or before the Proposal Deadline (described in “Section 7 - General Meetings”). The same person cannot stand for more than one role in the same election." If you would like to stand for election as Chair please contact the Secretary.

Ongoing Site Changes

As you have no doubt already seen, there is a new feature on ACCU's website - a privacy pop-up with options to accept non-essential cookies containing personal data and the sharing of your IP address.

The pop-up is required by the EU's GDPR, which mandates that web site users have the ability to affirmatively opt-in to process their personal data.

A new requirement, as found by a German court (LG München I, Endurteil v. 20.01.2022 – 3 O 17493/20) prohibits a website from sharing a user's IP address without the user's permission. Accepting the sharing of your IP address will restore the thumbnails on the video pages, and some book covers on older reviews.

Site Changes

I have made several changes to the website in order to comply with new GDPR mandates.

The video pages no longer show thumbnails of the video; a generic image has been put in place temporarily. The same has happened with book covers in older reviews. I hope to be able to restore these images in the near future.

I also have had to change the default font for the website. The Roboto font has been replaced with either Helvetica, Arial, or your default san serif font, depending on your browser support. (Arial is most likely to be used.) If you see any problems with how a page has been rendered with your default san serif font, please let me know.

There are two new magazine indexes available on the site. 'By cover' indexes are available for Overload and C Vu. Both indexes are available from the Journals drop-down menu at the top of each page. Clicking on an image takes you to the issue's table of contents page. You must be logged in to access C Vu contents.

Please note that we don't have cover images for some of the older issues of the magazines. For those issues, a placeholder image is used. Hovering over the image will reveal the issue's publication number, and clicking on the placeholder will take you to the issue's table of contents.

If you have digital copies of any of the issues for which we have no covers, or a paper copy and access to a scanner, please consider emailing me an image file: [email protected]. Thank you.

ACCU will be holding its 34th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at 1:30 PM (UK time) on 9th April 2022. This year, we will return to holding the AGM during the annual ACCU conference, but are planning at present to run the AGM as a hybrid event to enable those who can't make it to Bristol to participate.

As usual, all posts are up for election. Any member can run for any post. If you are interested in standing for election to one of the committee posts, please contact me at [email protected], or any other committee member.

C Vu 33.3 Errata

There is a typographical error in Francis Glassborow's "Homework Challenge 4" (C Vu 33.3, July 2021) that made it past the editing process. The third sentence in the fourth paragraph should read "It is professionals, white-collar workers ..." and not "... white-colour workers ..."

The ACCU committee is investigating methods and procedures that can be put in place in order to avoid this type of error in the future. In this instance, we have corrected the error in the online version of the article, and in the ePub and PDF versions of the magazine. Unfortunately, the printed copy of the magazine had already been mailed to members when the error was found.

ACCU sincerely apologizes for the error and any offence that it caused.

19:10 A Programming Language for Thinking about Algorithms - Richard Park

Being able to code isn't enough. You have to be able to reason about your algorithms if you want to get them right. Just like the symbolic notation of traditional mathematics allows you to think about your formulas, so too, a programming language inspired by traditional mathematical notation can aid your thinking about problems and the code used to solve them.

This session presents APL and its benefits for high-level development and comparison of algorithms, leading to an intuition about performance, for example in the context of memory access and amenability to GPU computing.

20:15 Polymorphism À La Carte - Phil Nash

If we've been using C++ family languages (including Java, C#, D etc) we may have a narrow idea of how polymorphism works. In this talk we'll present several different ways to do polymorphism, in a few different languages, along with their respective trade-offs, and conclude that, ideally, we'd have access to several approaches so we can pick the right one for the moment. Clojure does just that, coining the term Polymorphism À La Carte, and we'll hint at a C++ library that can do so, too. We'll do this in the context of the historical family tree of languages that C++ grew up in.

About the speakers:

Richard Park works for Dyalog, a modern APL implementor, teaching both novices and more experienced users about traditional and modern APL.

Phil Nash is the original author of the C++ test framework, Catch2, and composable command line parser, Clara. As Developer Advocate at JetBrains he's involved with CLion and ReSharper C++. He's also the organiser of C++ London and C++ on Sea, as well as co-host and producer of the cpp.chat podcast. More generally he's an advocate for good testing practices, TDD and using the type system and functional techniques to reduce complexity and increase correctness. He's previously worked in Finance and Mobile offers training and coaching in TDD for C++.

I have rolled out some updates and enhancements to the website:

Reviews have been updated to include a new index - Reviews by Rating - and review ratings have been added to all of the indexes.
The first ACCU Online video has been added to Videos. You can find Chris Oldwood's "A Test of Strength" here.
All pages have been re-proportioned to give a little more room to the content, and a little less room for the advertising.
There is now a big Join ACCU button on the right-hand-side of most pages.
Several members-only AGM-related pages have been migrated from the old site.

Here are some things you might have missed on the new website:

Want to get these news items delivered? Sign up for the RSS feed. The RSS link can be found by clicking on the RSS symbol at the top of each page, or the corresponding item in the Links column at the bottom of each page.
The carousel on the home page stops rotating if you place your computer cursor on it.
The World of Code blog aggregator, and the Essential Books wiki, haven't disappeared. They are still available via entries in the Links column in the footer.

Announcing ACCU's New Website!

ACCU has rolled out our new website!

Four months in the making, and still very much a work in progress, the new website starts us on the path of moving away from our old host environment - Xaraya - to a more modern infrastructure - Hugo, Flask, and Python.

Jim and I have worked hard to export ACCU's incredible catalogue of content (C Vu, Overload, reviews) from the old site to the new, with new page layouts and expanded indexing methods. In addition, we now have direct links to our conference video collections.

The most recent updates to the website, the addition of C Vu 32.4, are present on both sites. Going forward, magazines and other new content will be posted only to the new website. All of the old material will continue to be accessible from the old website, so if something is missing in the new site, please go there. September 2025 Update - The old site is no longer being used.

The conference website has been re-integrated with the main ACCU website. We will have new conference content as we progress towards ACCU 2021 in the spring.

For now, membership information (and some other content) is still being maintained by the old website (now at https://members.accu.org), so if you want to create an account, modify, subscribe, or resubscribe to ACCU, please continue to use the old web site's interface. Rest assured your web team will continue to work to integrate membership maintenance into the new web site in the coming months. September 2025 Update - The old site is no longer being used for membership actions.

Log-ins on the new and old site are independent, so for those pages that require login, you will need to log in on the particular site you are visiting.

About the Talk:

If there is one place that we find it easy to take shortcuts it's when writing tests. Whether we're under the cosh or have an overly-optimistic view of our ability to write self-documenting code, instead of creating tests that support the production code and development process we can find ourselves producing WTFs (Weak Test Functions). The net effect is often a vicious cycle that disparages, instead of encourages us.

In the past I've tried many different ways to try and short-circuit the test writing process, but have only come-up short every time. This session takes a look at why skimping on elements of the test structure, such as organisation, naming and scope only leads to pain and hardship in the long run. Along the way we'll uncover the truth behind common folklore, such as only having one assertion per test.

About the speaker:

Chris is a freelance developer who started out as a bedroom coder in the 80 s writing assembler on 8-bit micros; these days it s C++ and C# in plush corporate offices. He writes the "Afterwood" back piece in Overload magazine and the "In The Toolbox" column for C Vu magazine. Chris also commentates on the Godmanchester duck race. The conference programme committee is proud to announce the ACCU 2020 Schedule for the upcoming ACCU 2020 conference. We think it is a strong programme. We are happy that some speakers from years back have returned, last year speakers proposed again and that there are new speakers as well.

We have decided to move from our home grown conference application to Firebird’s conferencing application. This system has successfully been used by our organizer Archer Yates Ltd. for other events.

So the actual schedule is currently been published on Firebird’s system. Later we will mirror it to https://conference.accu.org.

This year we have all pieces in place. But as soon as something changes we will update the page.

People have already started registering for the pre-conference workshops and the conference itself – registering early is always good, especially for the pre-conference workshops.
