CIFOR-ICRAF has operated in Ethiopia since 2005, and has forged long-term collaborations with various partners in government, research institutes, civil society, and the private sector to accelerate the transformation of Ethiopia’s rural livelihoods in both agricultural and forest landscapes trees and forests.
Main research areas include:
Restoration of degraded landscapes, including tree seed portfolios for better access to quality tree germplasm and promotion of farmer-managed natural regeneration
Support for Ethiopia’s forestry sector, including: research on factors hindering sustainable forest sector development; capacity building in forestry education, research, and extension institutions; support for national forest law revision processes and sectoral plans; research on benefit-sharing mechanisms to encourage community and private sector engagement; technical, managerial and institutional innovations to conserve forests; and sharing of lessons to inform national forest policymakers, practitioners and global forestry actors.
Regreening and agroforestry solutions, including developing effective and efficient tree product value chains and markets, engagement of rural youth and women in tree-based value chains, for forest landscape restoration, and support for the establishment of the national agroforestry and watershed multi-stakeholders’ platform
Promotion of integrated watershed and natural resources development though climate-smart practices;
Green jobs through establishments of rural resource centres for small-scale farmers, youth and women.
Key outcomes
CIFOR-ICRAF contributed to the revision of the 2007 Forest Law. The current Ethiopia’s National Forest Law (2018) now recognizes the need for secure forest tenure, the need for classifying forests based on their primary uses, and the rights of communities, in part informed by long-term CIFOR-ICRAF research and engagement.
Draft version of the National Forest Policy and Strategy finalized to revise the 2007 National Forest Policy and Strategy, to better support the 2018 National Forest Sector Development Plan. – The 2015 publication ‘The context of REDD+ in Ethiopia: Drivers, agents and institutions’ helped inform the formulation of the national REDD+ strategy, and CIFOR-ICRAF has played a lead role in supporting the government to prepare its second phase proposal for the REDD+ Investment Program.
Rural Resources Centers have brought quality germplasm and services closer to farmers.
Innovative and cost-effective restoration and agroforestry technologies and practices have added value to degraded landscapes and exclosures.
High-quality seeds of tree species used for forest landscape restoration and tree planting have been made more accessible through the PATSPO project.
Partners have been empowered and equipped to take successful restoration and agroforestry innovation and technologies to scale.
The National Watershed and Agroforestry Muti-Stakholders Platform facilitated by CIFOR-ICRAF and chaired by the Ministry of Agriculture.
