Berman/Dodge Talk was a Huge Success

Last night, the St. Kate’s Student Chapter of the PLG held its first event, a question and answer session with local activists Chris Dodge and Sandy Berman. It was a full house, and the speakers wowed the audience with their wit and advice for progressive librarians. Here’s a brief rundown of the topics covered. If you were present, please add comments if we’ve left anything out. Also let us know what you thought of the event!

- history of the Minnesota Social Responsibilities Round Table
- new policy creation: counter-Quincentennial and services to the poor
- working within library hierarchies
- cataloging for the PUBLIC and for YOURSELF
- importance of cataloging and keeping free community papers
- how to start a task force within SRRT
- possible reopening of MSRRT (!)

Thank you Sandy and Chris! You were truly great.
Thanks also to David Lesniaski and Deb Torres for their kind support and encouragement.

Stay tuned! The St. Kate’s PLG is just getting started . . .

Back in the mid 1990's Sandy Berman and Chris Dodge spoke in Chicago at the invitation of the Illinois Librarians for Social Responsibility. They covered some of the same ground, and were truly inspirational.

Today, several members of Librarians for Social Responsibility work at the Oak Park Public Library right next door to River Forest home of Dominican University.

When St Kate's library students come down to Dominican, please look us up.

Thank you for the invite, James!

It really was a wonderful event. I'm a bit surprised that we have not heard from more attendees. I have talked to many individuals who left the meeting quite inspired; I most certainly did.

My questions to other attendees:

What did you think of the discussion? Were you inspired or did the whole thing make you ornery?

What are you passionate about when it comes to the library system?

What changes do you want to see?

What issues do you want to take on with others in the PLG to shake things up and make some changes in our community?

I'm anxious to hear from you all. Please don't be shy!
